Stainless Steel 321 is a basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilized by the addition of titanium (Ti). SS 321 is chosen for its resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C. It is the preferred grade for applications in temperatures up to approximately 900°C, offering a combination of high strength, resistance to scaling, phase stability, and excellent aqueous corrosion resistance.
The key feature of 321 stainless steel is its exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion. Titanium acts as a stabilizing element to prevent chromium carbide formation, and this alloy exhibits superior strength compared to 304 stainless steel, making it highly durable and stable in high-temperature environments.
